SERAFINI // ITALY

Andrea Serafini was born in Agordo, Italy. He received a diploma in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, later to win a scholarship at the International Higher School for Graphic Art “Il Bisonte” in Florence. He is now a Professor of intaglio techniques at the Academy of fine Arts in Venice. Since 1996 he has been participating in national and international exhibitions and awards. Serafini makes exquisitely drawn intaglio prints. The artist says’ “I want to show a sense of transience by representing covered spaces which can be perceived through the interplay of transparency, light, shades and perspective.” His work is concerned with ordinary urban life, where anonymous places provide the background for short encounters, road traffic, and transition. It becomes the observer’s visual filter through which to perceive the suggestions and hints for the graphic reworking. In latest works, he’s concentrated on street views, where the graphic effect simulating raindrops on the windscreen represents the accidental element, suggesting the freeze-frame of a subjective point of view in film making.

“My work is concerned with ordinary urban life, where anonymous places provide the background for short encounters, road traffic, and transition. People drive and walk by one another very briefly, thus leaving the observer with a sense of temporary and provisional presence.

On this background, the ‘visual interface’ is represented by the glass element, which works as a transparent /nontransparent diaphragm. It becomes the observer’s visual filter through which to perceive the suggestions and hints for the graphic reworking.

Reflecting surfaces, mirrors, translucent and fading shapes, turn the scenery into a game of osmotic perceptions.
Figures are designed to suggest a sense of unexpected, fluctuating situations as if they didn't belong to ordinary life.

The experimental etching method is coherent with this ideation process through which the concrete image is transported on printed paper.
